The aim of this study was to investigate energy expenditure during walking on variable speed and stride length. Subjects were seven young male. Treadmill workload consisted of walking at a speed of 1.0m/s, 1.5m/s, and 2.0m/s, respectively 15min. Three different stride-lengths (60, 70, 80cm) applied to the each walking speed for 5min. Two-way analysis of variance was performed on energy expenditure as dependent variables. Analysis indicated a significant interaction of stride-lengths and walking speeds. This, together with post-hoc tests with Tukey indicated that energy expenditure during walking at speed at 1m/s with 80cm stride-length was higher than at speed at 1.5m/s with 60-70cm stride-length. It was also observed that energy expenditure during walking at speed 1.5m/s with 80cm stride-length was similar to that during speed at 2m/s with 70cm stride-length. These results suggest that energy expenditure during walking can be significantly influenced by modulation of speeds and stride- lengths.
